Abstract

Umbilical cord infection (omphalitis) is one of the leading causes of neonatal morbidity and mortality. Improper umbilical cord care increases the risk of infection. Open umbilical cord care (dry cord care), which involves keeping the cord clean and dry without applying any substances, is recommended to prevent infection. This study aimed to determine the effect of open umbilical cord care on the risk of infection among neonates. A quantitative study with an observational analytic design was conducted. The study population included all neonates who received umbilical cord care. A total of 57 neonates were selected using the total sampling technique. Data were collected through observation sheets and analyzed using the Chi-Square test with a 95% confidence level (α = 0.05). The findings showed that 39 neonates (68.4%) received open umbilical cord care, while 18 (31.6%) received closed cord care. Most neonates (80.7%) did not develop infection, whereas 19.3% experienced infection. Among those receiving open cord care, 38 infants (97.4%) remained infection-free, while only one infant (2.6%) developed infection. In contrast, 10 infants (55.6%) who received closed cord care experienced infection. Statistical analysis demonstrated a significant association between open umbilical cord care and a lower risk of neonatal infection (p < 0.05). In conclusion, open umbilical cord care is effective in reducing the risk of neonatal infection. This method is recommended for healthcare professionals and parents as a simple, safe, evidence-based, and cost-effective strategy to prevent umbilical cord infection and improve neonatal health outcomes during the early postnatal period.
